What You Don't Know About Diet Pills Could Kill You

Diet pills are a multi-billion dollar industry. The unsuspecting public is desperate for a quick weight loss plan.

You probably saw the recent FDA Hydroxycut recall. Hydroxycut was implicated in liver failure and caused at least one known death, of a 19 year old boy. Hydroxycut has been on the market and sold in mainstream retail outlets for years. Why did it take the FDA so long to issue a recall?

Hydroxycut

Dr. Linda Katz of the FDA's food and nutrition division responded with: "the FDA has no authority to review supplements before they're marketed." The FDA has to wait for adverse incidents to be reported before they become aware of possible health hazards and begin investigating. Scary huh?

Another eye-opener is the FDA has issued dire warnings about unauthorized pharmaceuticals found in diet pills. Currently the FDA has identified unauthorized and potentially harmful ingredients in 69 weight loss supplements!

Some disturbing comments from the FDA about these "dietary supplements": "Some of the products claim to be "natural" or to contain only "herbal" ingredients, but actually contain potentially harmful ingredients not listed on the product labels or in promotional advertisements. These products have not been approved by the FDA, are illegal and may be potentially harmful to unsuspecting consumers."

This issue received some publicity after a defensive tackle with the Atlanta Falcons, Grady Jackson, said he used StarCaps to "make weight". He was subsequently suspended by the NFL for testing positive for a banned substance.

StarCaps was the source and the ingredient was not disclosed in any of their product labeling or promotional materials. No wonder, since the FDA says it can have serious side effects. These capsules were sold in mainstream stores like GNC and Vitamin Shoppe!

Perhaps the costliest diet pill debacle was Fen-Phen. 11 years ago the FDA recalled Fen-Phen after tests revealed that 30% of people who had taken it had heart valve problems.

How many warnings and recalls will it take before people stop buying diet pills?

You can lose weight and more importantly improve your health by focusing on a whole food, plant-based diet and getting regular exercise. Permanent weight loss is possible with lifestyle change. Boring and slow, maybe, but are diet pills worth putting your health at risk?
